By far, Mare Island was tbe best island for beaches on the transpacific cruise.Maré Island is the second-largest of the Loyalty Islands, in the archipelago of New Caledonia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean. Of the 7,000 inhabitants, 98% are the local Kanaks and the rest are mostly Europeans.
Mareans live in tribes associated with one of 29 chieftains. Most are fervent Christians, following extensive missionary activity by the competing Protestant and Catholic missionaries.
As there were no docking facilities, the ship's tenders ferried us to shore. The ship the ship sold us transportation to/from Yejele beach for $16US. We wwre greeted with freshly picked palm leaves decorating the jetty and local women who sang traditional songs, a great way to provide us with a taste of their culture. Later on, there are traditional songs and dances performed by local men and women
This was a gorgeous beautiful beach! just what you would expect from a south Pacific beach: wide white sand, waves breaking on the reefs in the distance, palm trees swaying gently in a light breeze, a few washrooms, some trinkets for sale, food and drink for sale some music playing in the distance near where we chose sit ... a million dollar view! There was enough shade as well as sunny areas.
