Peace Arch (Canadian Border), Peace Portal Drive,, Pacific Highway, Bakerview Rd., Meridian Ave., Squalicum Pkwy., Roeder Ave., Holly St., St., S. Bay Trail (parallels State St.), Chuckanut Dr., Larrabee State Park.
Cities:
Blaine
Ferndale
Bellingham
Departed Peace Arch Park at 8:00 am at the main USA/Canada border. Shot video footage at Marine Dr. In Blaine. Day started out overcast, turned sunny in afternoon setting up for a nice day of riding through country roads, the city of Bellingham and the extremely scenic Chuckanut Dr., a local favorite route along the Bellingham Bay.
As I was entering Bellingham on Meridian, I stopped at Five Guys for fries and chicken sandwiches for lunch.. There are several ways to traverse Bellingham but I chose to ride by the Squalicum Harbor by taking Squalicum Parkway and take in the marine sights. Anthony's Home Port, nearby, is open for lunch and dinner ... a great place for seafood.
As I wound through the downtown area, I rode along the waterfront on the South Bay Trail which parallels State Street. Stopped for a latte at Tony's in the Fairhaven district, on the South side, the historic area of Bellingham. If time permits,an interesting diversion is to visit the Bellingham Cruise Terminal where a ferry sails to Alaska daily and the Amtrak stops on its Pacific Coast run.
From Fairhaven, the best and most scenic way to transit South is via the ultra scenic Chuckanut Drive overlooking the Bellingham Bay. Larrabee State Park is about 15 miles out of town, and it was my camp for the first night of the trip. The campground was full but bikers are never turned away at state parks. Debbie came out with wine and cheese and managed to find my hike-in campsite. Jerry and Jane made a surprise visit. I won't see them for about two months. Overall, a good start, muscles not too sore...weakest joint to deal with are the knees.
Profound Thought of the Day:
AMD = awareness + mindfulness + determination.
