Several noteworthy items for the Oregon bike experience are worthy mentioning. For one, an overall view is that the state is very bike friendly.
The state park system seems to be better managed, cleaner facilities, and better hiker-biker sites. The fee is $5.00 a night compared to Washington's $12.00. Showers are included in the fee; in Washington, one needs tokens or quarters and the machines don't work on occasion.
While I traversed the Oregon coast, four squalls moved though causing strong Southerly winds where it became necessary to pedal downhill. Pedaling against strong headwinds is very strenuous. The weather systems caused slowdowns in my progress. The normal Northwesterly wind pattern was nowhere to be found.
The only two tunnels on the Pacific Route are both in Oregon. Each have flashing lights at the entrance to warn motorists about bikes in the tunnel but they still test the nerves because the cars do not slow down, there is no shoulder, and the amplified sound inside tunnel is thunderous.
The Oregon beaches and dunes are spectacular. Bikers have many options for parks and camping sites. There are many good eateries along the way.
I covered 400.3 miles in 14 days with 12 riding days ... close to my original plan.
