101 S, Gold Beach, Cape Sebastian, Harris Beach State Park, Brookings
By the morning the weather system has passed through the area and my wet clothes were almost completely dry. I turned up the heat in the room during the night to aid in the drying. Jordan, the hiker, who shared the suite with me at the Black Rock Motel was getting picked up by his father and I pack the Trek and shoved off towards Brookings.
Before I left town I took a picture of The Crazy Norwegian's house of fish and chips shrouded in fog early in the morning. I did not have a chance to sample their fare but the locals rated this diner very highly.
I headed up Humbug mountain towards my lunch stop in Gold Beach which was 27 miles further down the road. The road had moderate shoulders and traffic was very light early in the morning.
An unusual dinosaur attraction, Prehistoric Gardens, with a giant T-Rex came into view about 12 miles south of Port Orford. I stopped to investigate went into the gift shop. The woman tending the gift shop said that her grandfather built the rain forest dino park 58 years ago because he was very fascinated by these pre-historic creatures. To go through the park costs $10.00.
In Gold Beach, I rode down to port which was just off 101 and had lunch at the Porthole Cafe. I ordered a cod wrap with chipotle sauce and cole slaw. Mostly locals seemed to eating here. The place was very busy. The food was very good and the view of the harbor was a bonus.
Leaving Gold Beach, I was headed for an uphill climb to Cape Sebastian ... a three-mile strenuous uphill grind. Before reach Brookings and Harris State Beach, Cape Furlow had to be conquered.
Harris State Beach Park was my last overnight in Oregon.
